Koi are descendants of the
common carp, Cyprinus
Carpio.

Originally native to Eastern
Europe and Persia, Carp were
introduced to Europe, North
America, South America, Asia
and other areas of the world as
a commodity in trade or food.

Asagi

The body is blueish gray honeycomb pattern and Hi (red) on it's underside.

Bekko

This type of KOI has a white background with a black pattern throughout.

Doitsu

An unusual type of KOI in that it does not have any scales. These KOI come in several color combinations and can really enhance a pond.

Gin Matsuba

This KOI normally has a solid background with a pine cone pattern that grows darker with age.

Gormo

This type of KOI has a white background with a combination of red and black scales throughout.

Goshiki

An unusual KOI with several colors and patterns. This KOI is highly sought after with some color combinations of a white background with purple patterns throughout.

Hikari

Also a variety of KOI without scales. The color pattern is soft with yellow and orange being the most common colors.

Kohaku

Probably the most common variety of KOI. This KOI has a white body with various orange color patterns.

Kumonryu

Normally a white background with black stripes behind the head. This KOI changes colors easily from season to season.

Orenji Ogon

An orange KOI throughout. The ideal Ogon would be the same color throughout.

Platinum Ogon

The same as the Orenji Ogon but in a Platinum color.

Sanke

This KOI haa a white background with a combination of black and white patterns throughout. An ideal Sanke has the orange and black colors spread evenly throughout the body.

Showa

Black body with white and red patterns throughout the body.

Shusui

White body with orange sides and a bluish gray stripe down the center of the body.

Tancho

White body with a red spot between the eyes.

Tancho Sanke

Body is white with a black pattern on the body. Also has a red spot between the eyes.

Utsuri

Comes with a black background and a red or yellow pattern.

Yamabuki Ogon

Many KOI collectors consider this KOI to be one of the most beautiful KOI additions to a pond. This KOI can be found in yellow with a soft scale pattern throughout the body.
